Report of “The 66th Meeting of the Japan Esophageal Society(June 21-22,2012)”

The 66th Anual Meeting of the Japan Esophageal Society was held at Prince Hotel Karuizawa West, Nagano, on June 21st and 22nd in 2012. The main theme of the meeting was “Current progress and future outlook of Esophageal Diseases”. The typhoon was gone and it was a bright and clear day. There were 636 subjects to address and the number of participants was over 1000.

A special session on the current progress of esophageal diseases took place with a round-table talk. We mainly discussed how our predecessors considered medical treatment of esophageal cancers and what type of hardships and improvements there were until the present day. As a special session of esophageal diseases in the future, each specialist from surgery, internal medicine, radiology and pathology discussed the prospect of esophageal diseases based on its history.

Symposium 1 was “Clinical treatment and research for esophageal diseases and how to pass on this knowledge to the next generation.” During this session, we debated on how we should be passing on our knowledge and the high skill of clinical treatments, which are specialized and limited, to the next generation.

In Symposium 2, “Progress of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and the direction of indication”, we discussed case reports of esophageal treatments with some difficulties and the indication of ESD. The future of basic research and clinical studies was presented in Symposium 3, “Significance of science through esophageal cancers”, and it included the forefront of research on esophageal cancers.

In the Video Symposium, “What is the best surgery in the treatment of esophageal disease?”, we pursued the best methods of resection and reconstruction for esophageal cancers.

In Panel Discussion 1 “How medical teams should function for treating esophageal diseases”, we debated the current roles and future growth of medical teams with several medical staff from many different hospital fields.

In Panel Discussion 2 “The present situation of diagnosis and the prospects for esophageal motility disorders”, we discussed various diagnostic methods, endoscopic therapies and current and future surgical treatments for esophageal motility disorders.

In Workshop 1 “Multidisciplinary therapy for very advanced esophageal cancer”, we vigorously debated regarding chemoradiation as a midpoint and therapeutic strategy for progressive esophageal cancers.

In Workshop 2 “The consensus of Barrett’s cancer and esophagogastric junction cancer”, we discussed the definition of esophagogastic junction and medical treatment for esophagogastic junction cancers.

In Workshop 3 “The cutting edge of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) medical treatment”, we debated about diagnoses and medical treatments, including those for non-erosive reflux disease (NERD).

We invited Dr. Simon Law from Hong Kong for a lecture and he gave a talk on ‘Fifty years of esophageal cancer surgery – progress and innovation – experience from The University of Hong Kong.’

In the educational lecture, Dr. Hiroshi Sato gave a lecture on the method of videoassisted thoracoscopic surgery for esophageal cancer treatment.
Many different types of subjects and medical treatments regarding esophageal diseases were discussed during the oral sessions and in posters.

We are grateful to all the speakers who gave talks on esophageal diseases and hope that the members of this meeting enjoyed the wonderful opportunity to learn about the history of the clinical techniques of esophageal diseases.
